World Ocean Day

8th of June

Monday the 8th of June marks this year's annual World Ocean Day. This UN initiative was invoked in the nineties to raise awareness about the crucial role the Ocean plays in the daily lives of people around the world, and the importance of protecting it. But World Ocean Day is also a celebration. A celebration of how all people are connected by the Ocean, and how we all have a personal connection with it.

Essential to protecting the Ocean is of course keeping it clean. And luckily, there are many organisations and brands putting a big effort into this.

Every year, more than 8.000.000.000(!) tons of waste ends up in the Ocean and the seas. 80% of this waste comes from rivers. That's why River Cleanup calls all people to make our own rivers plastic-free. By cleaning out different rivers across our country all together, River Cleanup makes people a part of the solution, instead of the problem.

Californian brand O'Neill truly stems from the Ocean. With their first ever sustainable O'Neill Blue collection, fabricated with at least 30% of recycled materials from the Ocean, O'Neill show their engagement for our Ocean. The collection was designed in collaboration with Kimberley Jenneskens. She has directed a showcase at Amsterdam Fashion Week as well as both the summer and winter campaigns for 2020.

As concept for the 2020 campaigns, “Coming Home” stands for returning to the core heritage of the brand: O’Neill’s highly functional activewear since 1952, but then from a 2020 “cool kids” perspective.

A brand that really brings the Ocean into our daily lives, is La Redoute Interiors. In their interior collection, we can find some beautiful items with a subtle touch of Ocean, like this pillow with a whale, or wallpaper that makes you feel like you're under water.

What better way to honor the Ocean than to just dive right into it? And therefore, you need the right swimwear! Sustainable swimwear, that is. With these items, you won't only look good, but do good as well.
